Community groups and volunteers from across the Kells Municipal District were recognised at the 2026 Pride of Place Awards at the Headfort Arms Hotel on Wednesday evening, 14 October, The Kells Post reported.

Kells town had a strong night. Long-serving community volunteer Angela Ryan received the Volunteer of the Year award for her work in the town over many years.

In the Culture and Heritage category, the Hinterland Festival took first place for its long-running contribution to literature and culture in Kells. The Kells St Patrick's Day Committee was runner-up, with the judges noting its work to make the parade more inclusive.

Kells estates were also recognised. Cherryhill won the Innovation Award for features that give the estate its own identity, including a memorial garden and memory tree unveiled in recent weeks. Wilmount View was runner-up for Best Kept Estate.

Elsewhere in the district, Castletown won the Village and Townland Community Spirit Award, and Nobber was also recognised. Athboy took Best Large Town, Yellowford Estate won Best Kept Estate and Meadowlands Estate received a Special Recognition Award, Athboy Tidy Towns confirmed.

The evening was hosted by LMFM's Louise Ferriter, with Kells Municipal District Cathaoirleach Cllr Eugene Cassidy, Director of Services Dara McGowan and Meath Cathaoirleach Cllr Sarah Reilly among those attending.

It's the same story every year: the people of Kells look after their heritage, their streets and each other without being asked. A town that does that for its festivals and its estates is a town ready to look after its own Book.
