Can you see the Book of Kells
in Kells?

Why not?

The original Book of Kells is currently on display at Trinity College Dublin. It is not in Kells.

So the question is not a riddle. Can you see the Book of Kells in the town that gave it its name? No. Why not? How can Trinity College justify keeping a manuscript we believe was written and created here?

The people who took the glory need to answer this. We believe the Book was made in Kells. It belongs home.

We believe the Book was made in Kells. It belongs home. Not a loan. A return.
The fact

On display in Dublin.
Made in Kells.

If you came looking for the leaves, you will not find them in this town. Trinity holds them. That is the present fact, and it should be said plainly before anything else.

It does not settle the question. We believe the Book of Kells was written and created in Kells. It was taken away. Displaying it in Dublin is not a justification. It is the thing that has to be justified.

This site does not sell tickets. There is no basket and no timed slot. The town visit is the place the manuscript was made for, not a booking page for the college.

What you can still walk

Kells is 80 km from Trinity College Library, about an hour north. None of these places holds the original. They are the town the name points to. Hours change. Confirm them in Kells on the day. Photographs are on the gallery.

Canon Street. The tower of the monastic town that sheltered the book. Not the original manuscript.
High Cross
The churchyard, with the Round Tower behind. Stone witness. Not the original manuscript.
St Colmcille’s House
A National Monument in the town. Part of the landscape you can still walk. Not the original manuscript.
Courthouse hub
Headfort Place. A civic heart of modern Kells. Not the original manuscript.
The ask

Why not home?

Read the story on this site. Read the FAQ. Read who we are. The position is short enough to say without a footnote.

We believe the Book was written and created in Kells. It was taken away. It simply needs to be returned home. Not a loan. Not a season. Not a courtesy volume while the glory stays in Dublin.

The people who took the glory need to answer this. Until they do, you cannot see the Book of Kells in Kells. That is the scandal, not the starting offer.
